Tropical Storm Alma, 29 May 2008
A tropical storm has killed one person and destroyed homes on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.
Tropical Storm Alma made landfall Thursday near the Nicaraguan city of Leon, flooding low-lying areas, forcing evacuations and knocking out electricity. Authorities say one man was electrocuted by downed power lines.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Alma's maximum sustained winds weakened to 85 kilometers an hour after landfall.
The storm is forecast to move north over Honduras and later into Guatemala, bringing heavy rain to both countries as it continues to weaken. The tropical storm formed off the western coast of Costa Rica earlier Thursday.
