Talat meets US official
Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat received U.S. Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried yesterday in Nicosia. Friedman arrived in Cyprus to express U.S. support for the new peace initiative on the island. After meeting Talat, Fried met Greek Cypriot officials, including President Demetris Christofias.

EU called to form Union for the Black Sea
A European Parliament, or EP, report called on the European Union to establish a �Union for the Black Sea.� The report issued by the EP rapporteur on enlargement strategy Elmar Brok, said the union should include Black Sea countries, including Turkey, and EU members on the basis of equal membership. The report will be voted on Thursday.

Human Rights commissioner visits Cyprus
The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg arrived in Greek Cyprus yesterday for a three-day visit. The commissioner will assess the current developments as regards refugees and asylum seekers, and human trafficking. On July 9, Hammarberg will cross the Green Line and hold talks with representatives of northern Cyprus.

Turkey hosts drug conference
The 26th Annual International Drug Enforcement Conference, or IDEC, is set to start in Istanbul today. The conference, which is being held by the Turkish Police Department in cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, will bring together over 300 high-level drug law enforcement officials from 93 countries of the world.
