ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News
Preparations are already underway for the 11th International Congress of Contemporary Mosaic, which will be held this October in the southeastern Anatolian city of Gaziantep. Mehmet Önal, an archaeologist and the president of the International Association of Contemporary Mosaicists, or AIMC, said the congress will be held for the first time in Turkey and that he hopes it will help increase the popularity of the whole city.
The event, which will be held under the auspices of the Culture and Tourism Ministry and with the support of the Gaziantep Chamber of Commerce, will take place October 7 to 10.
Saying that mosaic experts and members of the Union of Ancient Mosaic Research will attend the congress, Önal, said, Native and foreign participants will give out a notice not only on contemporary mosaic art, but also antique mosaics and their restoration.
UNDER THE SHADOWS OF ZEUGMA MOSAICS
Önal, who during the congress two years ago gave a presentation on the mosaic heritage of Zeugma, noted that the event is organized annually in different countries and underlined that it was because of his presentation that the organizers decided to hold the event in Turkey this year. The Gaziantep Archeological Museum has in its collection over 1,500 square meters of Zeugma mosaics; however only 500 square meters of it is on display. The remaining pieces are preserved by the museum. For this reason Gaziantep is an optimal place to host a mosaic congress.
We will organize tours to Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, Hatay and Mardin for the archeologists and experts attending the congress as to make them familiar with the Turkish mosaic heritage, added Önal.
