OIC welcomes Cyprus talks
TheOrganization of Islamic Conference, or OIC, Secretary General professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoğlu welcomed a decision by Cypriot leaders to start full-fledged talks Sept. 3, in a written statement issued yesterday. He said the OIC had always supported a just solution based on the political equality of the two communities on the island.

Gaziantep hosts Turkey-Syria meeting
A meeting on Turkey-Syria economic relations will be held by the Gaziantep Chamber of Commerce on July 30, said a statement by the chamber' Secretary General Mesut Ölçal yesterday. He said there has been a recent boom in bilateral relations. “We think it is important that representatives from firms planning to do business with Turkey attend this meeting,” he said.

Iraqi Turkmens ask UN to ensure security
Saadettin Ergeç, the chairman of the Iraqi Turkmen Front, or ITF, said the United Nations should ensure security in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk. He told the Anatolia news agency that some demonstrators walked to the ITF office after they staged a protest march in Kirkuk. “They wounded some officials in the office, but their main goal was to kill me,” he said.

Iraqi vice president released from hospital
Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi has been released from the GATA Hospital in Ankara where he underwent minor surgery, said sources from Iraq's Embassy in Ankara yesterday. They said al-Hashimi was in good health and was expected to return to Iraq this week. Hashimi, who came to Ankara last week, had met Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
