İZMİR – Doğan News Agency
A 55-year-old woman who entered the operating room at the İzmir Dokuz Eylül University Hospital to get her cataract removed instead underwent a hysterectomy.
According to reports, the operation took place Tuesday and doctors and the operating staff responsible were suspended pending an investigation.
The incident, confirmed by the rector's office and the chief surgeon, occurred when Saadet Kılıç, 55, was mistaken with another woman around the same age.
Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine Acting Chief Surgeon assistant professor Hüdai Çatalyürek said, When the patient was taken to the operating room, the gynecology department operators took her in and performed a hysterectomy. The patient is in stable condition. Four members of the personnel are suspended.
He said it was the first time such a mistake was committed by the staff, adding, We have initiated an inquiry into the matter. It is a very upsetting incident for us too.
The provincial health director of İzmir, Dr. Mehmet Özkan, said he did not have detailed knowledge on the matter, but noted that universities were autonomous and he did not have the authority to impose fines or penalties.
No doctor would commit such a mistake on purpose, said Özkan.
