Bodies of devotees are seen in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, India, Sunday, 03 Aug 2008Indian police say at least 123 people have died in a stampede at a Hindu religious festival in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.
Local police say the stampede happened Sunday after metal railings broke beneath the weight of pilgrims trekking to the mountaintop Naina Devi temple in Bilaspur district.
Some reports say rumors of a landslide led to the commotion.
Authorities say at least 30 of the victims were children. More than 40 other people were injured.
Bad weather is complicating rescue efforts, but officials say the injured are being brought to hospitals in nearby towns for treatment.
Thousands of people had flocked to the Hindu temple to celebrate the nine-day Shravan Navratras festival, which began Saturday.
