ANKARA- TDN Parliament Bureau
Parliament will welcome a new legislative term with the renewal of its premises. Renovations are to include 520 new offices for deputies, a new security system and a new application that will allow deputies to follow a broadcast of the parliamentary channel via new mobile phones.
Following the top court's decision on the closure case against the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, Parliament went to recess July 31, and construction began immediately. According to the renewal project, coverage of the general assembly will be available via radio in addition to TV when Parliament reconvenes.
Security measures at the parliament building will be enhanced, with security cameras to be installed almost everywhere except in deputies' offices. Cameras will record 207 different locations in parliament 24 hours a day, with recordings to be kept for one year.
In further renovations, deputies will also have new offices. Currently 520 offices are under construction, but it is reported that construction will not be complete until well after the start of the new term, set for Oct. 1.
The cost of the new system will reach YTL 5 million, but the expenditures will not be met through Parliament's budget. Turkish Telecom, which has a telephone bill worth almost YTL 10 million a year, will install the new system without charge.
