Russia school collapse kills five
A staircase has collapsed at a school in western Russia, killing at least five children and wounding four others, the emergency services ministry says.
Several children are believed to be trapped under rubble at the school in the village of Belyayevka in the Orenburg region of the Ural mountains.
A spokesman for the ministry, Alexander Sorokaletovskikh, said the school was undergoing repairs, but remained open.
The regional authorities have opened a criminal inquiry into the incident.
The Interfax news agency said prosecutors were planning to look into possible violations of building safety regulations.
Correspondents say many schools in Russia are decaying after decades of neglect, although the government in Moscow has pledged to renovate buildings in poor condition.
