    --COURT ARRESTS FOUR MORE OFFICERS UNDER ERGENEKON PROBE
    An Istanbul court arrested Saturday four more commissioned officers on active duty in the latest wave of detention in the Ergenekon probe. Three officers were earlier arrested on Friday. Police detained head of a labor union, a journalist, and several police chiefs and police officers with the special forces unit on Thursday.
    --TURKISH PIANIST TO PLAY AT DAVOS SUMMIT
    Turkey's internationally acclaimed classical pianist Fazil Say is set to take stage at the closing party of this year's Davos Summit. Luzern Symphony Orchestra and conductor Alexander Liebreich will accompany Say in the concert. Say will perform works by Beethoven and Saint-Saens.

    --JEWISH ASSOCIATIONS EXPECT GESTURE
    Dan Mariaschin, vice-president of B'nai Brith which is one of the leading Jewish associations in the United States, said that they were expecting a gesture from Turkey about the security of Turkish Jews who faced protests after operation in Gaza.
    --ERDOGAN WANTS CLEAN TURKEY
    Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that they were struggling against criminal organizations with determination. He said, "I am thinking of a clean Turkey where our grand children will live."

    --4 OFFICERS, 9 POLICE OFFICERS ARRESTED
    Nine police officers including Ayhan Atabek --special forces department director-- as well as four police officers were arrested within the scope of Ergenekon probe. One police officer and one officer were released.
    --CLEAN TURKEY FOR CHILDREN
    Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey was taking brave steps against gangs. He said, "I do not think about today. I think about a very clean Turkey where my children and grand children will live."

    --ERDOGAN ASKS FOR SUPPORT FROM CIVIL SOCIETY FOR ERGENEKON CASE
    Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan asked for the very first time support of the civil society for the Ergenekon case during a speech on Saturday: "Operation Clean Hands was widely discussed when it was made in Italy. But certain circles, political institutions are now feeling disturbed by the operations in Turkey. They went too far even to say 'I am the advocate' (of the accused). We have to act in solidarity with the institutions of the civil society. We cannot clean our country of this if we fail to achieve solidarity between the administration and the civil society," Erdogan said.

    --POLICE, MILITARY OFFICERS UNDER ARREST
    An Istanbul Court arrested on Saturday four military and nine police officers who were taken under custody in the latest wave of detention in the Ergenekon probe. Arrested police officers with the special forces unit were reported to have said that they were included on a list by Ibrahim Sahin, a former head of the special forces unit who is also under arrest. They were also reported to have said that they were waiting orders for fighting against terrorism.

    --TOWARDS 0090 EUROPE ART FESTIVAL
    Turkish culture and art winds are blowing in the first two months of 2009 in Belgium. 0090 Art Festival will begin five days after the successful Istanbul Express Festival which ended yesterday. The first Istanbul Express Festival was held in 2006. The second year of the festival took place in Gent city of Belgium between Jan. 16 - 24, 2009.

    --4 OFFICERS ARRESTED
    Four of the five officers on active duty --who were detained under Ergenekon probe-- were arrested. One officer was released after his interrogation. One of the police officers, who were detained, was also released. Nine police officers were sent to court.

    After three military officers, who were detained in the 11th wave of Ergenekon probe and were arrested two days ago, four other military personnel were sent to prison yesterday. Thus, the number of military officers, who were arrested with the claim of being "member of Ergenekon terrorist organization", increased to seven.

    Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan compared Ergenekon case to operation Clean Hands in Italy, and said, "I don't think about today. I am thinking about a clean Turkey where my grand children will live. We should leave such a Turkey."

    President Abdullah Gul said Jewish people living in Turkey would not be affected by the heated exchange that happened between Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Israeli President Shimon Peres in Davos, Switzerland. Prior to his departure for Saudi Arabia, Gul told reporters at the airport, "no one should assume a wrong attitude towards each other. We should warn those who assume a wrong attitude.     -- CIA CHASES FOR STOFFEL
    It was revealed that retired Gen. Levent Ersoz, who was arrested under Ergenekon probe, was under "special protection" for years. CIA has been chasing Ersoz after Dale Stoffel, an American arms dealer, was killed in Iraq's Green Zone. Following the mysterious murder in Baghdad in 2004, murderers of Stoffel uncovered his relations thanks to documents they found in his suitcase. It was claimed that information about the 40-billion-USD arms market, in which everything is traded including lost U.S. weapons, was seized by Ersoz. Stoffel was a CIA agent, who could easily reach U.S. President George W. Bush and a kingpin of the giant arms dealing market from Washington to Lebanon and Turkey. He served as CIA station chief and then began running his own arms dealing business. Stoffel was also known as the "Lawrence of Arabia", and his secrets passed to Russian agents after his death.

    -- TURKISH GIRL CANDIDATE FOR EUROVISION FOR GREEK CYPRIOTS
    Zelis Senol, a Turkish girl, has become one of the ten candidates to represent Greek Cypriot administration in Eurovision song contest. Zelis will sing the song "I'm gonna break up with you" and represent Greek Cypriots if she is chosen.

    -- TESTIMONIES REVEAL MURDERS THAT PUT COLONEL UNDER CUSTODY
    Turkish daily Milliyet has received copies of the testimonies that paved the way for a series of excavations in the southeastern town of Cizre, where 13 pieces of human bones were discovered, and the subsequent arrest of a colonel in the central province of Kayseri. The testimonies reveal details of the murder of five people who were kidnapped and killed during the 1990s. The testimonies of an informant say people who provided assistance to the terrorist organization PKK were kidnapped and were delivered to Hezbollah in Turkey; a fact known to certain military commanders.

    -- MAN KILLED IN ARMED ROBBERY
    The owner of a jewelry store in Istanbul's Uskudar district was killed in an armed robbery on Tuesday, a day after another jewelry store was robbed by armed men in another Istanbul district, Erenkoy. In the capital Ankara, a number of armed men tried to rob a supermarket on Tuesday night. The owner of the supermarket and one of the robbers was killed in the incident.

    -- SIMSEK ON ECONOMIC CRISIS
    State Minister Mehmet Simsek said Turkey would weather the economic crisis through measures that the Turkish authorities have taken. The rest of the world will see a recovery by the end of the year due to the implementation of decisions take by the G-20, Simsek said. "Turkey will become one of the countries to first breath a sigh of relief when the positive signals start to appear," he said.

    Within the scope of the Ergenekon probe, former General Staff chiefs retired Gen. Hilmi Ozkok and retired Gen. Yasar Buyukanit could appear in court as witnesses, officials said. Earlier, Ozkok said, "I would not say 'no' if the court invites me either as a witness or a suspect."

    -- WHY IS AKP STRONG?
    Goldman Sachs, one of the giant banks in the world, prepared a report regarding this weekend's local elections in Turkey. It said the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have three advantages over its rivals. One of them is leadership: Premier Tayyip Erdogan is the most popular leader in Turkey without any discussions thanks to his unique leadership features and exceptional talent in moving the masses. Despite this, all other leaders are deprived of Erdogan's charisma and society sees them as "elitist", which gives them a serious disadvantage reaching more disadvantages segments of Turkish society.
    The second is ideology: The AKP successfully unites Islamic and nationalist tones and is therefore attractive for conservative voters (the votes of rightist parties is around 65 percent) who have a crushing majority in Turkey.
    The third is organization: The AKP is also a leader in getting organized. The AKP is represented even in the smallest villages of Anatolia and has a fairly dynamic party organization.

    -- "I DIDN'T SAY KURDISTAN, I SAID KURDISH ADMINISTRATION"
    President Abdullah Gul, who returned from Iraq, said he did not use the expression of "Kurdistan," which caused reactions from the opposition.     President Abdullah Gul denied that he had referred to the administration in the northern Iraq as "Kurdistan regional administration." "I did not use such a term. There is a local Kurdish administration in Iraq's north as part of the country's constitution. That is what I said," Gul told reporters on his return from Baghdad.

    RADIKAL-- WE CAN'T WAIT FOREVER, GUL TELLS IRAQI KURDS
    President Abdullah Gul met Iraqi Kurdish delegation in Baghdad. "They reaffirmed their determination in the fight against the terrorist organization PKK. Turkey appreciates it. But we can not wait forever for its outcomes," he said. Gul said he did not discuss a possible "amnesty" for the PKK during his meeting with Necirvan Barzani, executive of the regional administration in the north of Iraq. "I do not speak with others about our own issues," Gul said.

    Industry Minister Zafer Caglayan spoke about rising car sales after a cut on private consumption tax. "It is not a giant cut but people started to buy cars in a herd mentality," he said.

    President Abdullah Gul visited Iraq as the guest of Iraq's President Jalal Talabani, and became the first foreign leader to spend the night in Baghdad since the start of the six-year U.S. occupation.     A new legal framework that brings certain limitations on advertisements relating to alcoholic drinks has prompted a strong wave of criticism from producers. Brewer Efes Pilsen's boss Tuncay Ozilhan said that in movie theaters alcohol adverts could not be screened until after the film ended. "The film ends and the viewers leave the theatre. Who would stay to see the advertisement? This is a tricky way of banning adverts for alcohol," Ozilhan said. Sibel Kutman, director of the wine maker Doluca, said producers' views had not been taken into consideration.

    -- SCHOLAR SAYS TURKEY SHOULD EXTEND "SOME KIND OF APOLOGY" TO ARMENIANS
    Prof. Fikret Adanir, a Turkish scholar from Istanbul's Sabanci University, said despite not actually labeling the incidents of 1915 as "genocide," Turkey should extend some kind of apology to Armenians. "The state made a terrible mistake in 1915. A way must be found to reach out to Armenians, but at the same, the tragedy that Muslims suffered in the Balkans and the Caucasus should be underlined," Adanir told daily Milliyet.

    Deputy Premier and State Minister Bulent Arinc said Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan would rest for a few days after he cancelled a planned trip to Greece due to high blood pressure. "He is fine. He is just a bit weary from the high temperatures and fatigue. He is going to take a few days off," Arinc told reporters.

    It has been determined by police and gendarmerie reports that the colonel, who allegedly wrote the document aiming at a "conspiracy against democracy," used two different signatures. Prominent painter Bedri Baykam said that the participation in yesterday's rally could not be compared with the previous one since it was held in June and people were on vacation.

    The death toll increased to 11 in Saturday night's traffic accident near Kizilcahamam town of the capital city of Ankara. Meanwhile, it was revealed that the accident was the result of the driver falling asleep at the wheel. The driver of the minibus, which was carrying university students back from a school picnic in Abant, was injured in the accident.

    -- TURKISH KEBAB MAKER HITS DUBAI
    Turkish kebab maker Ali Akkas opened a branch of his Kosebasi Restaurant in Dubai after opening restaurants in Brazil and Bahrain. Akkas's Kosebasi was named by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the 50 best restaurants in the world. Kosebasi's next destination is Qatar, says Akkas who wants to open 20 new restaurants in Gulf countries within five years.

    Commenting on the "coup" document, President Abdullah Gul said that other important issues on the agenda should not be forgotten. "Turkey is a transparent country. If there is something wrong, it will be brought to light with the help of the law and the necessary actions will be taken. If some people carry out such acts intentionally, then actions will be taken against them as well. Nothing remains hidden," Gul said. He also said judicial mechanisms were properly functioning, adding that the other important issues on Turkey's agenda such as development, reforms and democracy, should not be neglected.

    After the decision of the military prosecutor's office on an alleged anti-government plot document, Gen. Ilker Basbug, chief of the Turkish General Staff, said, "we believe that this piece of paper has been forged by certain circles to wear out and besmirch the Turkish Armed Forces." Gen. Basbug said, "as the commander of the armed forces, I am telling you very clearly: Take your hands off the armed forces and stop defining your political position over the armed forces. Stop carrying out an asymmetrical psychological campaign against the armed forces over the news media." "We will express our uneasiness on the matter in the meeting of National Security Council which will take place on June 30," he said.

    -- ERDOGAN: "WHEN WE REACH ORIGINAL OF DOCUMENT, WE WILL BRING IT TO COURT
    Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said that when they reached the original of an anti-government document, they would bring this issue to the court. In response to a question on General Basbug's remarks of Friday, Erdogan said that the military prosecutor may have approached the document issue differently. "The process from now on belongs to the civilian prosecutor. The military judiciary decided that the document is not related with the military.     Chief of Turkish General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug who held a press conference in Ankara said the "Action Plan for Fight with Reactionary Movements" was jurally just a piece of paper, and asked the Chief Public Prosecutor's office to find those who prepared the document, given that the document was not authentic. Gen. Basbug said given the current situation in the investigation they did not ask the investigation to concentrate on whether the document was authentic or not. He said should new evidence, information or indicators come to light the investigation could be relaunched but pointed out that as long as the scope of allegations do not change the Military Prosecutors would carry out the investigation. Gen. Basbug said they did not find it appropriate to discuss these issues in front of the public adding that they would bring these issues before the National Security Council meeting next week. Basbug said an asymmetrical operation against the Turkish Armed Forces was carried out over the media.

    In the last day of the legislative year, a critical amendment was made in the Code of Criminal Procedure (CMK) . A single word amendment in the Article 250 of the CMK opened the way for trials for crimes against the "constitutional court", "national defense" and "state secrets" --which fall in the area of responsibility of the high criminal courts with special authority-- to be carried out by these courts. The amendment also opened the way for Col. Dursun Cicek, whose name was involved in allegations regarding the controversial "Action Plan for Fight with Reactionary Movement", to be tried under operation Ergenekon.

    -- CONSPIRACY TO BE BROUGHT UP IN MGK MEETING
    Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug who held a press conference with force commanders said regarding the conspiracy document that they would bring up the matter in the meeting of National Security Council (MGK). Gen. Basbug said this piece of paper was forged in an attempt to smear the Turkish Armed Forces.

    Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said regarding an alleged conspiracy document that military judiciary might have approached the matter in a different way and the following process belonged to the civilian judiciary.

    Premier Tayyip Erdogan assessed the remarks made by Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug during his visit to Belgium. Erdogan said that they launched an investigation into an anti-government document even if it was a photocopy. "When we reach the original of it, we will bring the matter to the court," he said. Civilian judiciary would carry out the following process, he said.

    -- "I FACE A CONSPIRACY"
    Lieut. Col. Mustafa Donmez appeared in the military court regarding ammunition unearthed in the Zir Valley in capital Ankara. Donmez, who is facing with 12 years of imprisonment, said that there was a conspiracy against him. "The sketch does not belong to me. Ammunition does not belong to me, either," Donmez said. Donmez was arrested under the Ergenekon probe. Police impounded the sketch at Donmez's house showing the whereabouts of some buried hand grenades.

    -- 9 MILITARY OFFICERS TO BEAR TESTIMONY
    Ergenekon Prosecutor Zekeriya Oz, summoned Col. Cicek Dursun whose autograph is allegedly on the "plan to eradicate AKP and Gulen congregation" to bear testimony. Cicek is expected to give testimony on Monday or Tuesday. Eight other officers were also summoned to the court as suspects.

    -- AMMUNITION CASE, LIU. COLONEL DONMEZ. SAYS THE POLICE BURIED EXPLOSIVES
    The trial of Lieutenant Col. Mustafa Donmez (regarding the explosives recovered from underground during the excavation in the Zir Valley, Ankara) began. Donmez said that he was clearly face to face with a "police plot" and claimed that the ammunition was buried a few days before he was arrested.

    -- BASBUG CALLS IT "JUST A PIECE OF PAPER" WHILE PROSECUTOR SUMMONS COLONEL FOR TESTIMONY
    Chief of Turkish General Staff Gen Basbug said "eradicating AKP" document was aimed at wearing down the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) while only a few hours later the Ergenekon prosecutors summoned the Colonel who is said to have signed the document to bear testimony. Gen. Ilker Basbug said the "plan to eradicate AKP and Gulen congregation" was not a document but a mere piece of paper. He said certain organized conspiracies turned into a defamation campaign against TSK and regarded this campaign as an "asymmetric phycological war". Basbug pointed out that a document which was seized in June 4th was serviced to a daily newspaper, adding that reports of the police and Gendarmerie leaked out. "I wonder if there is intention behind this?" asked Basbug. A few hours after Basbug's statement, Col. Cicek Dursun whose signature is on the said document, was summoned by the Ergenekon prosecutors to bear testimony.

    -- ERDOGAN: "THE PROCESS CONTINUES IN CIVIL COURTS"
    Premier Tayyip Erdogan commented on Gen. Basbug's remarks in Brussels and said, "I have to respect all remarks. However we had already carried the issue to court and an investigation was launched. The military courts may have approached the issue rather differently, however the proceedings will continue at civilian courts after now."

    Oktay Ozdemir, chairman of executive board of MOL Shops, said "a Turkish company won a tender for manufacturing outfit of Libyan soldiers for the first time. MOL Shops won this tender."
