İZMİR - Already jolted by two years of specialized police clean-up operations sweeping through its municipalities, İzmir woke up to another operation yesterday.

Police led by Republic Prosecutor, with Special Authority Murat Gök took, 61 people from the Konak Municipality into custody. The operation started eight months ago with a letter denouncing a gang nested in the municipality. As a result of yesterday’s operation, one municipality council member, eight municipality officials, five fire department workers, three municipal police officers and 44 follow-up men were taken into custody on corruption charges.

The clean-up operations have hit five municipalities, two of which are run by the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, with three run by the Republican People’s Party, or CHP.

Speaking to a local newspaper, Murat Gök hinted that operations in İzmir will continue.
