Fethiye’s mayor and his deputy were attacked and stabbed Wednesday. Both are stable and have no life-threatening injuries, the hospital’s chief physician said.
Mayor Behçet Saatcı of the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, and deputy mayor Mehmet Yılmaz Cesur were attacked in the morning by Halit T., who was later taken into custody. The perpetrator was still under police interrogation when the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to press Wednesday.
Muğla Police Chief Emin Körpe told reporters that the perpetrator said he was jobless for some time and knows the mayor.
Ahmet Mimaroğlu, the chief physician at the hospital where both victims are under treatment, said the mayor was stabbed right below his heart, while the deputy’s wound was in his abdomen. “According to the initial findings, their injuries are not life threatening,” he added.
Nesrin Saatcı, Mayor Saatcı’s wife, said she spoke to the mayor and he was okay. “Behçet still keeps a smile on his face,” she said.
Many municipal employees, Fethiye locals and friends rushed to the hospital after the incident was learned. Police have taken security measures in front of the station where the perpetrator is being held to prevent any retaliation.
