Gina Mohr and Christian Reichert won their 5,000-meter races to establish total German domination on the final day of the European Open Water Swimming Championships in Marmaris on Sunday.
The final day of the championships, which are organized by the European Swimming League, the continental governing body for aquatic sports, started from Marmaris Public Beach. The races drew the attention of hundreds of locals and tourists in the popular holiday district in the western city of Muğla.
The five-kilometer race took place with the participation of 27 athletes from Turkey, Belgium, England, Slovenia, France, Spain and Israel, but Germany prevailed as the victor country of the day.
Mohr won the women’s race over Spanish Marta Reico and Slovakia’s Nika Kozame, while Reichert was the winner of the men’s event, besting fellow German Andreas Waschburger and Spanish Ivan Brion.
Turkish swimmers Bertuğ Coşkun finished 11th in the men’s race, while Beril Polat came in eighth in women’s contest.
