Bahtiyar Kurt, the lawyer assigned by the Istanbul Bar to defend Police Chief Hanefi Avcı, who was arrested last week, has objected Tuesday to his client’s arrest.
Avcı was arrested on charges of “aiding and abetting a terrorist organization” and invoked his right to remain silent. Kurt said his client stated he would not object to the arrest on the day but the act was unlawful.
“Avcı is aware of the procedure I carried out today… He said he would not object to the arrest. However he has no clear and open objection to my actions today. He left that part of the job to me as his lawyer.”
The former Eskişehir police chief was drawn into the media spotlight following the recent publication of his book “Haliç’te Yaşayan Simonlar: Dün Devlet Bugün Cemaat” (‘Devotee’ Residents of Haliç: Yesterday State, Today Religious Congregation). The book alleges the religious Fethullah Gülen community has covertly taken control of the state.
